New Hampshire Collaborators

NH Public Universities

Summary

The US onAir Network will be working with volunteers from New Hampshire universities, colleges, and nonprofit organizations to oversee the curation and moderation of posts, aircasts (online discussions), and in person events for the New Hampshire onAir Hub …  related to federal, state, and local elections and government.

Our first outreach will be to University of New Hampshire partly because of its proximity to the state capital. We have identified many of University of New Hampshire’s civic engagement, academic, internship and research programs related to making democracy and civic responsibility a focus of higher learning on their campus … for students, faculty, staff, and local community. This post, over time, will have similar information on other collaborating organizations in the state.

Contact ben.murphy@onair.cc for more information on how to involve your organization.

OnAir Post: New Hampshire Collaborators

About

The University of New Hampshire’s onAir chapter will initially focus on training interested undergrad and graduate students on how to curate New Hampshire onAir content especially submitting Top News articles, events, videos, and information and moderating forums in each post they curate.

Student curators will also work with state senate and house committee chairs to produce aircasts on issues being discussed and bills being proposed in their committees.

During election season, students with other other organizations like the League of Women Voters, will coordinate and produce aircasted debates with candidates.

University of New Hampshire

Source: About

We’re New Hampshire’s flagship public research institution, which means our students and faculty work together to examine the past, engage with the present and build the future. Here, you’ll do work that contributes to the common good within our state, and way beyond. Our majors don’t just prepare you for the world—they’re designed to empower you to change it.

UNH Professors win major awards (think Guggenheim, Pulitzer and National Science Foundation) and are called upon by lawmakers to solve our nation’s greatest challenges. You’ll be taught by experts in the field—and play a role in their trailblazing work.

What you learn in the classroom should apply to your life. That’s why UNH has built facilities and partnerships to put you in the heart of the action—like studying marine biology at the Shoals Marine Lab or product engineering in our InterOperability lab.

Civic Engagement Programs

Civic and Community Engagement leads UNH students into the world to serve. Our goals are to meet community needs beyond the campus, to empower students to lead change in their communities, and to promote active citizenship in a diverse democracy.

Our vision is threefold: that UNH will attract and retain service-minded students; that UNH will serve as an asset to the surrounding communities; and that all UNH students will graduate as engaged citizens with the skills and intention to be active in strengthening their communities.

Student Government

Source: Student Senate

The Student Senate is the official voice of the undergraduate Student Body at the University of New Hampshire. The Student Senate and the various offices and officials underneath it work to advocate for student concerns, and to sway the Administration to act in the best interests of the Student Body. The Student Senate, autonomous of the Administration, also controls the annually collected Student Activity Fee, a mandatory fee that all undergraduate students pay to fund student activities and events. The Student Senate also must approve changes to the Student Rights, Rules, and Responsibilities, and reviews other sections of the SRRR and the Student Code of Conduct.

This Student Senate, which is the iteration still in existence today, is the longest surviving student government ever to exist at the University of New Hampshire, proving that the decades of hardship in the mid 20th-century for students’ right to self-government had finally succeeded. Many grievances put forth in the protests of the 1960s, such as complete student control over the funding of student organizations, is now realized through the Student Activity Fee Committee of this, the current, Student Senate. Student demands for a say in the student conduct system are realized in the Student Senate’s enduring power to review changes to the Student Rights, Rules, and Responsibilities. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the push for the autonomy of student government is fulfilled by the complete student composition of the Student Senate, which does not even have a faculty or administrator advisor.

While the Student Senate, like all other forms of government, is by no means perfect, its resilience to address the needs of generations of UNH students makes it a symbol of hope in the endure of student self-government for campuses across the country.

Research Initiatives

Research at the University of New Hampshire, a Carnegie Classification R1 university, seeks to understand and improve the world around us, with high-impact results that transform lives, solve global challenges and drive economic growth. Our research excellence reaches from the depths of our oceans to the edge of our solar system and the Earth and environment in which we all thrive. UNH’s research portfolio includes partnerships with NOAA, NASA, NSF and NIH, bringing in nearly $130 million in competitive external funding each year.

The Hamel Center for Undergraduate Research provides resources and financial support for the research, scholarly, and creative projects of UNH students. One-hundred percent of the funding for research awards and fellowships comes from donor gifts.

Many graduate students begin their life’s work at UNH. They benefit from world-class faculty mentors, renowned research centers and institutes, and extensive partnerships with organizations representing industries as diverse as space science and social work. Whether they choose to pursue degrees at the master’s or doctoral level, UNH graduate students learn how to apply cutting-edge research methods to solving real-world challenges, and their research regularly helps them receive competitive fellowships from organizations such as EPA, Ford, Merck, NASA, NIH, NOAA, and NSF.
